LOOK BLUE GO PURPLE

LOOK BLUE GO PURPLE COMPILATION

"Look Blue Go Purple was the most important band in Dunedin throughout the mid-1980s. Musically they weren’t necessarily the most proficient, and in terms of song-writing they weren’t the most prolific, but in terms of the scene they were far and away the most irreplaceable group – they were the glue that held everything together. And they made great records, and played the greatest gigs."

Bruce Russell - FLYING NUN website

LOOK BLUE GO PURPLE:
Denise Roughan - Guitar
Kath Webster - Guitar
Norma O’Malley - Organ and flute
Kathy Bull - bass
Lesley Paris - drums.

These 5 women were rocking and we regularly hear great stuff from people reminiscing about their live gigs in the mid 80s. They produced 3 EPs: Bewitched (1985), LBGPEP2 (1986) and This Is This (1988) but I have to say their music gets picked up lightning fast so if you spot them in our store get in quick! At times we have posters in store from their past gigs, these are also pretty popular... check out the link below for what is available at the mo! If you visit the recently face-lifted Toitu Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin, there is a special DUNEDIN SOUND exhibit where you can experience some of the music and vids of the time... we so recommend visiting this place.. and check out the Look Blue Go Purple vid in there!

Ok, lets take a step back in time right now and experience 'Cactus Cat'!

28 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY: THE BATS

THE BATS

THE LAW OF THINGS

"Remarkably, despite long periods of inactivity, the band's original lineup of Scott plus singer/guitarist Kaye Woodward, bassist Paul Kean, and drummer Malcolm Grant remains intact. So too does that dreamy, disconsolate feeling that settles in whenever the Bats' best music takes hold and nimbly seeps under your skin."

pitchfork.com review of FREE ALL THE MONSTERS

How often is it that you hear of a band that has stayed together for over thirty years, with the complete original line-up of members?!

Such a feat, and the fact that they have been making remarkable music all along the way just adds to the wonder of THE BATS.

Although THE BATS first beginnings came about in Christchurch, they were part of the Dunedin music community of the 80s, whose sound collectively became known as the 'Dunedin Sound'. THE BATS have not only found an intensely loyal New Zealand following over the years, but have regularly toured internationally, guested with Radiohead and The Buzzcocks and count amongst their travels many tours of the United States (yes there is talk of more touring in the not so distant future!!) THE BATS are without a doubt amongst our top you-must-go-and-see-them-live-they're-awesome-and-you-will-never-regret-it bands.

The joy of researching many of the original Flying Nun bands is the discovery of all of the connections that exist between the bands. It doesn't take much reading or asking to discover that many musicians of the 80s era had many projects on the go... for example THE BATS founder Robert Scott is also a member of THE CLEAN. (For some extra historic NZ music learning check out Gareth Shute's book NZ Rock 1987 - 2007).

You might notice in our collection of BATS goodies that we stock a selection of original band gig posters... you might notice that we also have some original artworks that the posters were printed from... Robert Scott is responsible for many of these artworks, and artwork for THE BATS album covers.

Ok time for some music....

DAVID KILGOUR and THE HEAVY EIGHTS

 LEFT BY SOFT

"David Kilgour's way with music over the years is the kind of gift of talent that maintains its own pace; without being demonstrative about it, he just seems to release one excellent album after another in group, collaborative, and solo contexts, where one listen is all it takes to remind someone of just how good he is. Such is the case with his latest album backed by the Heavy Eights, Left by Soft, where the opening instrumental title track has not one, but two brilliant solos that seem to float above the energetic, crisp chug of the main arrangement like birds skimming over a lake."

Left By Soft album review on ALL MUSIC

Well we LOVE David Kilgour and all of his endeavours...

THE CHILLS

SOMEWHERE BEAUTIFUL

"The Chills were exemplars of the so-called Dunedin Sound – an often moist and melancholy, simultaneously dark and breezy amalgam of Western garage-pop roots but invested with an otherworldly aura, as if those overseas influences had indeed seeped in upside down. But only Phillipps was this quixotic, bridging folk and bubblegum, Bowie and Syd Barrett, with feverish shivers and childlike whimsy. (No one else would have dared wear pixie boots with no irony, only joy)"

Martin Aston - Flying Nun Records

The central figure of Dunedin band The CHILLS is Martin Phillips.
There have been over 20 line-ups of this band in the past 30 years, and incredible musicians in the mix.

The current line-up consists of these fantastic musicians:
Martin Phillips  vocals, guitar, keyboards
Erica Stichbury keyboards, violin, rhythm guitar, backing vocals
Oli Wilson keyboards and backing vocals
James Dickson bass and backing vocals
Todd Knudson drums

They are currently rehearsing to head off on tour to AUCKLAND, CHRISTCHURCH and DUNEDIN... and for those of you in Europe... tour dates are in the works!!

3 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY: DEAD C

3 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY:

DEAD C

PATIENCE

"Their early work was rooted in feedback-drenched indie rock but they soon moved from this into more experimental work, in which every noise imaginable that could be made with each instrument was explored and brought to bear around the theme at hand - which often meant that the tracks would rise into an ethereal range of screeches howls and thunderous pounding. The music was hard to latch on to, but nonetheless stirring and emotional in its intensity."
Gareth Shute, p.139 NZ ROCK 1987 - 2007

The Dead C are without a doubt one of Dunedin's most iconic bands - often described as 'noise-rock' or 'free-rock'.
Formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1987, within a do-it-yourself and punk-rock music culture that was to become known as the 'Dunedin Sound'.
Dead C gained even greater popularity within international subculture circles... Sonic Youth regularly arranged for them to play support for their New Zealand shows!
By the year 2000 Dead C had released 14 albums!!!
