Posted on March 13, 2021 by Irene Hundleby

VOR-STELLEN LIVE IN-STORE AT RELICS !

VOR-STELLEN are also playing several FRINGE gigs - check out the FRINGE PROGRAM

VOR-STELLEN are Brendan Moran and Stephen Reay...
Brendan Moran is an award winning musician (both b-net and NZ Music awards) and an experienced live performer and recording artist. He has performed both locally and internationally drumming in many different bands with a variety of styles including punk, metal, surf, country, folk-ish, free-noise / sound art, indy-alternative, krautrock and pop.

Brendan has released several records with Flying Nun (avoid!avoid, The Subliminals, The Hasselhoff Experiment) and was part of the original line up of Fly my Pretties. He has toured NZ numerous times and played many festivals (e.g. Big Day Out, The Others Way, Rippon) and has been present on the drum stool alongside international artists Damo Suzuki (from German avant-garde group CAN), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks) Eric Gaffney (ex- Sebadoh), Nathan Means (Trans Am) and Jorge Ledezma (Defender).

Brendan is also a visual artist and holds a Master of Fine Arts from Taideyliopiston Kuvataideakatemia (University of the Arts Helsinki), and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching Visual Arts (Secondary level) from the University of Auckland. He is currently introducing his experience with drumming to his fine arts practice.

Stephen Reay is a guitarist and composer. He has performed as part of the Subliminals and Avoid!Avoid (Flying Nun Records) and the Haints of Dean Hall (Arch Hill Recordings). He uses guitars and amplifiers as way to create sonic textures that explore notions of everyday engagement with wellbeing, ecology, nature and human impacts on the environment.

Whilst Vor-stellen will be musically different to previous work Steve Reay and Brendan Moran have collaborated in, visually it will be developing ecological themes and video representative concepts they were looking at with their previous project, Avoid!Avoid.

ANTHONY RITCHIE - 'CHILDHOOD' ALBUM LAUNCH !

RELICS is pleased to present ANTHONY RITCHIE'S new album 'Childhood'
WHEN? Thu 25 March, 5.30pm
RSVP: info@relicsmusic.co.nz

The recording Symphony No.5 is subtitled ‘Childhood’

It is an optimistic work, using childhood as a metaphor for renewed hope for the future. With the current Covid pandemic engulfing the world, more than ever we need some sense of hope. It was written for The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, to celebrate the re-opening of the earthquake-stricken Christchurch Town Hall, and was recorded by The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra under conductor Ken Young in June 2020. The first public performance was by the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra under Marc Taddei in September 2020, under level 2 restrictions with just 400 people in the Town Hall.

The symphony is divided into five movements with the subtitles: Beginnings, Play, Hopes and Dreams, Life-force, and A future, and features some child-like sounds of ratchets and pots and pans. The beautiful art work for the CD jacket is by Dunedin-based artist and childrens’ illustrator Robyn Belton.

RELICS PRESENTS: SERJ TANKIAN'S "TRUTH TO POWER" DOCO

Posted on February 21, 2021 by Irene Hundleby

SERJ TANKIAN'S "TRUTH TO POWER" DOCUMENTARY

RELICS ONLINE ACCESS --> RENT TRUTH TO POWER

AVAILABLE TO RENT BEGINNING FEB. 19 2021 (20 FEB in NZ)

Kia ora koutou ! Happy to share with you all access via Relics to the new Serj Tankian (System of a Down) documentary:
TRUTH TO POWER is available online from 19 Feb --> if you love their music and/or a good social justice / fight the power story -- this doco is right up your alley! Check out the trailer & link below👇

With exclusive interviews, adventures, and original footage personally filmed by Serj, Truth to Power allows audiences backstage access to an international rock star whose faith in music not only revolutionized heavy metal but also world events,” Oscilloscope Laboratories said of the documentary.

“Throughout his life, the musician has pursued social justice, harnessing the power of his songs and celebrity for real political change. Serj’s voice is equally likely to take on American corporate greed as lambast the corrupt regime of his homeland. His decades-long campaign for formal U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide was finally approved by Congress last year. Governments hate him. People love him."

"The straw-man argument at the center of Truth to Power, a documentary about the art and activism of System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian, is: “Can music change the world?”

If you know anything about Tankian — or Fela Kuti, Pete Seeger, Billie Holiday, N.W.A, Ludwig van Beethoven, and on and on — the answer is self-evident. But once filmmaker Garin Hovannisian moves past this question and begins showing how Tankian and his bandmates have improved the status of their ancestral homeland, Armenia, the power of truth starts hitting its marks. The film is well-paced, tightly edited and engaging, and at times, it’s quite inspiring."

(Rolling Stone Review)

Enjoy!
