17 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY:

CONNAN MOCKASIN

PLEASE TURN ME INTO THE SNAT

"As he proved on Forever Dolphin Love, he's not afraid to go theatrical. Like a cartoon madman, he delivered a warbling, wide-eyed plea on that record: "Please turn me into the snat". The title track of that album featured over 10 minutes of cluttered, kinetic, continuously shifting music. Connan's clearly got it in him to create a sizable, at times unsteady odyssey."
PITCHFORK review of Connan Mockasin's Caramel album

Hailing from the little town of Te Awanga near Cape Kidnappers in Hawkes Bay, Connan Mockasin has rallied around a crowd of supporters across the globe. His quirky and outside the box personality sets him apart. Connan's psychedalic pop flavoured music is endearing, and the end of each album leaves me curious to see what joy he will bring us next!
Currently he is touring madly around the planet... whenever he makes it home to NZ next we highly recommend that you see him!
Here's a little eclectic joy from the man himself....

16 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY: LITTLE BUSHMAN

LITTLE BUSHMAN

PENDULUM

"It's been a long time since I've been affected by an album in this way. Pendulum has worked a path through my blood stream, setting up outposts in far reaching arteries and organs and seems now ready to slowly open me up as it gently kneads the brain, sending it's signals to the hand that holds this pen that writes these words. What witchery is this?!"
amplifier.co.nz review of Pendulum

Some of my all time favourite live gigs in New Zealand have been both Little Bushman and Trinity Roots gigs. The main reason being that they set a vibe in a room... and then they pick everyone up and transport them to a whole different level. These performances hold more than the joy of individual songs...they are a collective experience... and one that is always memorable!

"We collectively try to create a journey without sounding contrived & have made a conscious decision to use influences from the experimental, psychedelic Rock era of the 60’s & 70’s: Led Zep, Jimi Hendrix, The Who." Little Bushman

Each Little Bushman album is great... and their album with John Psathas and The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is simply divine - one of the best NZ orchestral-comtemporary albums out there!!

IF YOU ARE IN WELLINGTON TOMORROW SAT 17 MAY: YOU CAN SEE LITTLE BUSHMAN LIVE WITH THE NUDGE !!
For the rest of us... check out their music when they're next in your town... here's a start...

MATT LANGLEY

 VIRGINIA AVENUE

“His diversity as a writer and performer and collection of songs that invites the listener to reflect on love, life, loss and hope rendered with the sparing beauty of a true song-smith."
Simon Sweetman - Dominion Post

Acclaimed singer-songwriter MATT LANGLEY has a way of reaching out and touching you with raw truths. Matt is a  storyteller and has built a solid following through live performance in intimate venues around New Zealand. 14 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY: MOTHER GOOSE

MOTHER GOOSE

THIS IS THE LIFE

"Mother Goose were a rock and roll band from Dunedin who had significant success in the late 1970s in Australia. Their unique and quite hilarious video for the 1977 single 'Baked Beans' was amongst the most played clips across the Tasman that decade."

Murray Cammick, Audioculture.com

1970s Dunedin rock band MOTHER GOOSE were Craig Johnston and Steve Young (from The Biggles) Peter Dickson, Dennis Gibbons and Marcel Rodeka (from Argus). They reunited in 2007 as part of Re:Sound Three Decades of Dunedin Sound for a live concert at the Regent Theatre on Friday 23rd March 2007 along with The ChillsThe Clean and Sneaky Feelings

Argus do reunite every now and then and in case you didn't know - just played live at the ROBBIE in Dunedin last week!

We will definitely let you know if we hear of any upcoming live performances...

Another little side note - many Dunedin drummers have been inspired and taught by Mother Goose drummer Marcel Rodeka... including two of our RELICS team - Sarah Williamson and Bebe James...  here's a little of what Marcel has to say...

"What can you say about Mother Goose? The band really was one out of the bag on all counts. There was never anything like it before and there’ll never be anything like it again. It was a unique piece of rock’n roll, vaudeville, theatre that just seemed to hit the mark wherever it played."
Marcel Rodeka

Ok, so, check out this super fun MOTHER GOOSE music video from back in the day!

13 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY: UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA

II

"If their self-titled debut was any indication of an experiment in funk and garage, UMO’s II delves deeper into the jazz-tinged psychedelia end as guitarist Ruban Nielson’s riffs become a more prominent character alongside his strange, otherworldly vocals. Diverging a long way from The Mint Chicks, his previous power-punk outfit that indulged in two-minute hits of adrenaline, Nielson’s UMO has developed even further with this new collection of personal cuts that explore themes of loneliness and isolation."

http://prettymuchamazing.com/reviews/unknown-mortal-orchestra-ii

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA are a New Zealand-American band currently based out of Portland, Oregon US. Band members include: Ruban Nielson, Jacob Portrait, Riley Geare.
You may know of Ruban Nielson as part of NZ band The Mint Chicks. Earlier this year II was also nominated for NZ 2014 Taite Music Prize, and in 2013 was awarded Best Alternative Album at the NZ Music Awards.
If you are lucky enough to be in the US at the moment, check them out... they are currently touring there!

12 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY: MOUNTAINEATER

Posted on May 12, 2014 by Irene Hundleby

12 MAY 2014 ~ NZ ARTIST OF THE DAY

MOUNTAINEATER

MOUNTAINEATER

"Moutaineater’s debut album is a veritable sonic gourmet of psychedelic noise rock of the calibre you'd expect from well-versed practitioners of the form. After years of touring, the Dunedin band present a truly formidable onslaught onstage. However, the album format also suits them well. The listener has the time and space to appreciate the more subtle details in the music which might be missed out on live due to the voluminous power they project."
Michael Harvey, undertheradar.co.nz

MOUNTAINEATER are without a doubt one of my most favourite local Dunedin bands... (well at least they used to be Dunedin local.. these days geographical location separates members of the band a little). The vocal intensity of Tristan Dingemans is equaled in drive and fervour by Chris Livingston (drums) and Anaru Ngata (bass and guitar), and the result is a combination of in-your-face powerful music that is brooding and heavy yet also sonically atmospheric. Live performances from these guys will blow you away!

You may know of Tristan Dingemans as the former lead vocalist of Flying Nun band - HIGH DEPENDENCY UNIT (HDU)... and if you don't - you probably also want to check them out. More recently Tristan can also be heard around town flying solo as KAHU...

Each act has a flavour of it's own, but in a nutshell - great music!

Here is the music video 'Lord of Sumo' uploaded by MOUNTAINEATER to youtube...

TINY RUINS

BRIGHTLY PAINTED ONE

"This is meticulously minimal music that feels like suddenly emerging somewhere still and magical. They centre on the gorgeous voice and crisp fingerpicking of singer/guitarist Hollie Fullbrook who has touches of a less theatrical Laura Marling but also a nice kiwi undertow and a hint of Karen Dalton."
Roy Wilkinson, MOJO

Songwriter Hollie Fullbrook formed TINY RUINS as a solo project in 2009, however she is now joined by bassist Cass Basil and drummer Alexander Freer. The album Brightly Painted One is receiving fantastic reviews, and they are about to tour later this year in New Zealand and internationally. If you like music that has a delicate, intimate - 'draw-you-in' quality... you probably want to check TINY RUINS out...
